Comprehensive Speech & Language Services
The L. L. Schendel Speech and Hearing Clinic at Florida State University is proud to offer comprehensive clinical speech and language services for both children and adults who are dealing with a wide spectrum of communication disorders. We are dedicated to providing evidence-based assessment and treatment to residents of Tallahassee and the surrounding area. Speech-language, assessment and treatment services are available for children, adolescents, adults, and the elderly. Services are available to anyone in the community who contacts the Clinic, regardless of affiliation with Florida State. Services are provided based on scheduling availability, the needs of the client, and the training needs of the program.
Working alongside our highly qualified Speech-Language Pathologists, are approximately 70 graduate students who participate each year in high quality assessments and interventions to address the needs of individuals with communication impairments. Students and clinical faculty work in close collaboration with academic experts, to provide a holistic approach to assessment, diagnosis, and intervention. The FSU graduate program in speech-language pathology is accredited by the Council on Academic Accreditation In Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA; 2200 Research Blvd. #310, Rockville, MD, 20850, 1-800-638-8255; www.asha.org). The Director of Clinical Education is Dr. Tricia Montgomery.
Speech-Language Evaluations
The FSU Speech & Hearing Clinic provides comprehensive speech and language evaluations to determine the nature and severity of the communication disorder. Evaluations are provided for children and adults and are scheduled for at least a two-hour session. In addition, all potential clients are asked to complete a case history form to assist in preparation of the evaluation.
If you already have received a speech and language evaluation at another location within the past three months, please send us the report with your case history form. This will allow us to determine if or what additional diagnostics need to be completed.
In addition, we will need relevant medical reports from previous speech/language evaluations. We also will need radiological reports (e.g., swallow study reports or written results of brain scans).
Services are provided by graduate students under the direct supervision of faculty members and clinical instructors. All professional staff members are licensed by the Florida Board of Speech Language Pathology and Audiology and certified by the American Speech Language Hearing Association.
Speech-Language Therapy
Intervention programs vary depending on the nature and severity of the communication disorder, the person’s age, and individual concerns. Therapy is provided for children and adults and may be scheduled for individual or group sessions. In-person and teletherapy options for treatment are available. Parents of children in therapy as well as family members or caregivers of adult clients receive information regarding the person’s progress and ways to facilitate communication skills outside the clinic.
